Alex Haley's legacy has been about about reconciliation of race and the importance of family connections. The Memorial was erected in dedication of African ancestors whose names are lost to time. According to the Annapolis City, it is also a memorial that is dedicated to anyone that arrived to the New World in bondage from Africa, Asia and Europe. Upon their labor, it has been "forged the backbone of the nation's rise to greatness. It is dedicated also to their descendants, who strive to create a nation that celebrates ethnic diversity within the spirit of brotherhood, mutual respect and understanding."
